WELCOME
Our group may hold interest for you, if you or somebody you know, contracted paralytic or non-paralytic polio as a child or adult, and have managed to lead an active productive life but now are experiencing new difficulties that are unrelated to ageing.
A large proportion of polio survivors are experiencing new symptoms, such as unexplainable fatigue or pain and weakness similar to that as when they were first diagnosed, but are unable to find the advice and help they need.
Understandably because of the vaccine discovery, polio is in many ways now considered to be a ‘controlled’ and ‘obsolete’ disease. This has resulted in many GP’s and consultants being unfamiliar and unacquainted with the reasoning behind conditions with which they are presented by polio survivors and are ignorant of essential information.
The British Polio Fellowship is a charity formed in the 1930’s as an aid to the many thousands of people who survived the ravages of the frequent polio epidemics which played havoc throughout the UK until the discovery of vaccination. In union with them the Greater Manchester Polio Group was re-formed in 2003 in an effort to help members in Manchester and surrounding areas, who sought information concerning their condition and also enjoy a chat and a Coffee with other survivors who may be experiencing the same difficulties.
We meet from 12.00 noon until 3.00 p.m. the FIRST THURSDAY of each month. At the SPORTING EDGE centre, Openshaw, Manchester, M11 1FG (the entrance to the car park is off Fairfield Road, opposite Edge Lane).
If you are interested in attending a meeting you will be made very welcome just call in at any meeting.
